[01:06] NeonLicht (~NeonLicht@darwin.ugr.es) joined #ltsp.
[01:10] [garymc] how do I undo this command :gconftool-2 -s --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true
[01:11] [Hyperbyte] Nothing has internet?
[01:11] [Hyperbyte] What does that mean?
[01:12] [garymc] thin clients have no internet and dhcp isnt starting automaticly
[01:12] [garymc] *fat clients
[01:13] [Hyperbyte] Sounds like a network manager problem.
[01:13] [Hyperbyte] Type service network-manager status
[01:14] [garymc] network-manager start/running, process 739
[01:15] [garymc] I just installed Google Chrome and docky
[01:15] [garymc] now ive uninstalled them
[01:15] [garymc] :S
[01:15] [garymc] no one got internet in work
[01:15] [Hyperbyte] Not a solution.
[01:15] [garymc] no
[01:15] [Hyperbyte] I told you before, if something breaks - fix it, don't reinstall/revert.
[01:16] [garymc] i paniced
[01:16] [garymc] Pniked
[01:16] [garymc] Panicked
[01:16] [Hyperbyte] cat /etc/network/interfaces
[01:16] [garymc] auto lo
[01:16] [garymc] iface lo inet loopback
[01:17] [garymc] thats it
[01:17] [Hyperbyte] Okay
[01:17] [Hyperbyte] That's good
[01:17] [garymc] :(
[01:17] [Hyperbyte] Type 'ifconfig'... everything look normal?
[01:17] [garymc] yes
[01:17] [Hyperbyte] Interface names are correct?
[01:18] [garymc] yes
[01:18] [Hyperbyte] eth0, eth1?
[01:18] [Hyperbyte] Okay...
[01:18] [garymc] yes
[01:18] [Hyperbyte] Type iptables -L
[01:18] [Hyperbyte] (pastebin)
[01:18] [Hyperbyte] Also
[01:18] [Hyperbyte] cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward does that return 1 or 0?

[01:19] [Hyperbyte] sudo iptables -L
[01:19] [garymc] that returns a 1
[01:19] [Hyperbyte] My mistake. :)
[01:20] [garymc] what mistake?
[01:20] [Hyperbyte] Needs to be 'sudo'
[01:20] [garymc] what bit
[01:21] [Hyperbyte] 10:19 <Hyperbyte> sudo iptables -L
[01:21] [garymc] yes i done that
[01:21] [Hyperbyte] gary@ubuntu64bit:~$ iptables -L
[01:21] [garymc] oh ok
[01:22] [garymc] http://pastebin.com/YfvhBdCr
[01:24] [garymc] i dont understand why they have all lost internet connection
[01:24] [garymc] and dhcp failed to start on reboot
[01:26] [alkisg] How did your fat clients boot without a dhcp server?!
[01:27] [garymc] they never, i restarted it when i saw they would not boot
[01:27] markit (~marco@88-149-177-66.staticnet.ngi.it) joined #ltsp.
[01:27] [alkisg] And now the problem is that the server has internet, and the clients no?
[01:27] [garymc] exactly
[01:27] [garymc] im having a panick attack right now, calls coming in and Ive broke the server
[01:27] [Hyperbyte] garymc, the script in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ we created doesn't execute.
[01:27] [alkisg] Maybe your broke your NAT/Masquerading on the server? How did you do that?
[01:27] map7_ (~map7@ppp118-209-183-61.lns20.mel6.internode.on.net) left irc: Ping timeout: 260 seconds
[01:28] [Hyperbyte] garymc, ls -al /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/
[01:28] [garymc] i just installed chormium and docky
[01:28] [garymc] I have since removed both
[01:29] [Hyperbyte] Paste line with the dhcpfix file we made.
[01:29] [Hyperbyte] And stop panicking.
[01:29] [garymc] http://pastebin.com/BeB0QdLA
[01:29] [garymc] ok
[01:29] [garymc] -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 186 2011-09-09 14:04 02dhcpfix
[01:30] [Hyperbyte] Okay, cat the 02dhcpfix file
[01:30] [garymc] god, how
[01:30] [Hyperbyte] How? cat 02dhcpfix ?
[01:30] [garymc] cat /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/02dhcpfix
[01:30] [garymc] ?
[01:31] [Hyperbyte] Yes please.
[01:31] [garymc] http://pastebin.com/QKwBqH8Q
[01:32] [Hyperbyte] Run /sbin/iptables-restore < /etc/ltsp/nat
[01:32] [Hyperbyte] Internet will work.
[01:32] [Hyperbyte] This doesn't actually solve your problems I think.
[01:32] [Hyperbyte] But at least you can stop panicking and look at this problem at a more suitable time.
[01:32] [garymc] so type: Run /sbin/iptables-restore < /etc/ltsp/nat
[01:33] [Hyperbyte] sudo as well please
[01:33] [Hyperbyte] sudo /sbin/iptables-restore < /etc/ltsp/nat
[01:33] [garymc] ok
[01:33] [garymc] ill test now
[01:33] [garymc] cool internet is back on
[01:33] [garymc] phew
[01:34] [garymc] I need to look at this, why would chromium or docky break my whole system?
[01:34] [Hyperbyte] Okay. Now what happened, is that there went something wrong with NetworkManager... the script didn't start.
[01:35] [garymc] ok , ill tell you what I done
[01:35] [Hyperbyte] We made a script, the 02dhcpfix, which starts dhcpd and sets up internet connection sharing
[01:35] [garymc] I come into office 30 mins early
[01:35] [garymc] I installed DOCKY and CHROMIUM
[01:35] [Hyperbyte] So something you did, has made it so the NetworkManager script doesn't start.
[01:35] [Hyperbyte] It didn't 'break your whole system', just the NetworkManager bit.
[01:36] [garymc] Docky didnt work correctly so I googled a fix, I found this code into terminal: gconftool-2 -s --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true
[01:36] [Hyperbyte] Keep in mind, if you reboot, it'll probably be back to the basics, and require manual dhcpd start and execution of the iptables command I just gave you.
[01:36] [garymc] then docky appeared ok
[01:36] [garymc] damn
[01:37] [Hyperbyte] First things first.
[01:37] [Hyperbyte] How did you install Chromium?
[01:38] [garymc] i went into server room and logged in. and went to software center in menu
[01:38] [Hyperbyte] Okay
[01:38] [garymc] i have sinced removed both though
[01:38] [garymc] :(
[01:38] [Hyperbyte] This, you are never gonna do again.
[01:38] [garymc] no
[01:38] [Hyperbyte] From now you will use 'apt-get' from the command line.
[01:38] [garymc] ok
[01:39] [garymc] why am i so stupid
[01:39] [Hyperbyte] If you want to install something, 'apt-get install <programname>'
[01:39] [Hyperbyte] However!
[01:39] [garymc] ok
[01:39] [Hyperbyte] Keep in mind, when running thin/fat clients, the software for the clients is in /opt/ltsp/
[01:39] [garymc] ok
[01:39] [Hyperbyte] With thin clients, everything runs on the server, so if you install something on the server, it'll be available on the clients
[01:40] [Hyperbyte] With fat clients, everything runs on the clients. So if you want Chrome on the fat clients, you need to install it in /opt/ltsp/ - not on the server.
[01:40] [garymc] ok, that I dont know how to
[01:40] map7_ (~map7@ppp118-209-183-61.lns20.mel6.internode.on.net) joined #ltsp.
[01:41] [garymc] So I need to fix my problem with dhcp and nat? then look at installing programs in opt/ltsp
[01:41] [Hyperbyte] Yessir.
[01:41] [Hyperbyte] Also, you need to learn to do these things via command line, not via the GUI on the server. This will make things a lot easier for you.
[01:42] ogra_ (~ogra@p5098ed03.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) left irc: Excess Flood
[01:42] [Hyperbyte] Navigate to /opt/ltsp/amd64/ and type 'ls'
[01:42] [Hyperbyte] Don't pastebin it by the way, I know what it says
[01:42] [garymc] ok i will never use gui on server again
[01:42] [Hyperbyte] I just want you to see the whole filesystem there, the copy of Ubuntu inside your server's Ubuntu, which the fat clients use
[01:43] [garymc] ok
[01:43] [garymc] i see
[01:44] ogra_ (~ogra@p5098ed03.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) joined #ltsp.
[01:45] [Hyperbyte] The /opt/ltsp/amd64/ OS, is made into a network image. This image is stored in /opt/ltsp/images/. Have a look there as well, see the image file.
[01:45] [garymc] so thats what the fAT clients use
[01:45] [garymc] amd64.img
[01:45] [Hyperbyte] If you modify or install anything in /opt/ltsp/amd64/, you need to run ltsp-update-image to update the image in /opt/ltsp/images/
[01:45] [garymc] ok
[01:46] [Hyperbyte] So that's how the client OS works.
[01:46] [alkisg] And to get "into" that fat os to install things, you run: sudo ltsp-chroot
[01:46] [Hyperbyte] Now about actually installing something in the client
[01:47] [alkisg] Or better yet, sudo ltsp-chroot -c -p
[01:47] ddave7 (~Miranda@109-183-1-25.tmcz.cz) left irc: Quit: Miranda IM! Smaller, Faster, Easier. http://miranda-im.org
[01:47] [garymc] ok
[01:47] [Hyperbyte] You can use something called "chroot" to change the /opt/ltsp/amd64/ into your primary OS for your terminal. Basically, it logs you in to the client.
[01:47] [Hyperbyte] The ltsp-chroot script sets it up for you automagically.
[01:48] [garymc] then when in there : sudo apt-get chromium
[01:48] [garymc] etc
[01:48] [garymc] then when donw : sudo ltsp-update-image
[01:48] [Hyperbyte] :)
[01:48] [Hyperbyte] You are learning fast, grasshopper. :)
[01:48] [garymc] :)
[01:49] [Hyperbyte] It's apt-get install chromium though, but those are details.
[01:49] [garymc] ok but do I need to be in the /opt/ltsp/amd64/ folder?
[01:49] [garymc] before apt-get install chromium
[01:49] [garymc] ?
[01:49] [Hyperbyte] Type just 'apt-get' for more info on the terminal application manager.
[01:49] [NeonLicht] apt-get install chromium-browser
[01:49] [Hyperbyte] garymc, the 'ltsp-chroot' commands does that.
[01:49] [NeonLicht] chromium only is a game.
[01:49] [garymc] ok
[01:50] [garymc] so what about my reboot stuff
[01:50] [garymc] eg, dhcp and nat
[01:50] [Hyperbyte] garymc, ltsp-chroot makes /opt/ltsp/amd64/ into /
[01:50] [garymc] is it an easy fix, or is this gonna be a ball ache
[01:50] [Hyperbyte] Try this:
[01:50] [Hyperbyte] ls /opt/
[01:50] [Hyperbyte] ltsp-chroot
[01:50] [Hyperbyte] ls /opt/
[01:50] [Hyperbyte] exit
[01:51] [Hyperbyte] Second time there's no /opt/ folder, because you're inside /opt/. :)
[01:51] [garymc] ltsp-chroot : no command found
[01:51] [Hyperbyte] whereis ltsp-chroot
[01:51] [garymc] ltsp-chroot:
[01:52] [Hyperbyte] That's not a lot.
[01:52] [garymc] thats all it says
[01:52] [alkisg] That's 11.04, right?
[01:52] [garymc] no 10.4.3
[01:52] [garymc] I think
[01:52] [alkisg] Ah, I thought you had 11.04
[01:52] [garymc] 11.04 is BETA ?
[01:52] [alkisg] It might be in /usr/share/ltsp/scripts/ltsp-chroot in your case, but it's a little old
[01:52] [alkisg] Of course it's NOT beta
[01:52] [garymc] ok
[01:53] [Hyperbyte] ls /usr/share/ltsp/scripts/ltsp-chroot
[01:53] [alkisg] Put it in pastebin if you find it
[01:53] [alkisg] So that we see how old it is
[01:53] [garymc] http://pastebin.com/GTuRRDQF
[01:54] [alkisg] cat /usr/share/ltsp/scripts/ltsp-chroot
[01:54] [alkisg] The whole contents, can you put them to pastebin?
[01:54] [garymc] http://pastebin.com/19ffxVkE
[01:55] [alkisg] Nah, ignore that, it's rather old
[01:55] [alkisg] You can download a new one as the wiki here says: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FatClients#Further_chroot_customizations
