[06:33] [vmlintu] elias_a: learning new ltsp tricks?
[06:33] [elias_a] Yep - and teaching :)
[06:33] [elias_a] We are discussing Gnome desktop control at the moment.
[06:34] [vmlintu] how many people are attending?
[06:34] [elias_a] 19
[06:35] [vmlintu] sounds like there'll be another ltsp boom coming in Finland
[06:35] [elias_a] You here that, friends in other parts of the world. We able to get about 20 LTSP admins together twice a year.
[06:36] [elias_a] Our population is around 5 million...
[06:36] [vmlintu] Any new ideas that have come up?
[06:37] [elias_a] No - not really that new.
[06:37] [elias_a] I guess we are getting to that tomorrow.
[06:38] [elias_a] In USA you guys should be able to set up a conference of 1200 people... :)
[07:01] [dobber] i'm gonna be speaking in a open source con later this year

[07:43] reynolds (~reynolds@static-69-95-250-98.buf.choiceone.net) joined #ltsp.
[07:45] [reynolds] Good Morning! I could use some help figuring out my problems with my upgrade to 10.4. The Main propblem I seem to be having is my lts.conf, does not seem to be reflecting in my clients. Local apps are not being reflected in the menu items ssh, is on, etc.
[07:47] [dobber] vmlintu openfest.org
[07:51] [alkisg] highvoltage, stgraber: I'm having problems with statd (nfs locks daemon) on Lucid, it frequently doesn't start on boot and so the fat clients that use NFS_HOME hang while e.g. pulse tries to aquire a lock.
[07:51] [alkisg] If the nfs mount options on the client are changed from "defaults" to "defaults, nolock", then the hanging problems are solved and speed is increased, but there might be some rare cases where 2 people need to have a lock on the same file under /home, and it won't work then.
[07:51] [alkisg] I think that's a rare case, compared to the hangs I'm experiencing, so if you don't mind I'd like to put that nolock option (and also I think only a few people are using the NFS_HOME lts.conf option anyways...).
[07:52] [alkisg] (otherwise I can just change it in my PPA, but I think others will be having the same problems on Lucid, so I thought upstream would be better)

[08:03] [elias_a] vmlintu: http://openfest.org/english/ ;-)
[08:10] [Gadi] alkisg: can't you start statd manually on boot before mounting the homedir?
[08:10] [alkisg] Gadi, sure, but what about all the other teachers/admins?
[08:11] [Gadi] statd on the client?
[08:11] [alkisg] ...and I think it was also hanging at some points, trying to contact the clients but having dns problems
[08:11] [Gadi] make it part of the script
[08:11] [alkisg] ...as the clients are using dynamic IPs, so they can't really receive nfs updates
[08:11] [alkisg] (after reboot, that is)
[08:12] [alkisg] Gadi, no, statd on the server
[08:12] [Gadi] ah, so statd on the server hangs while servicing the clients and has to be restarted?
[08:12] [alkisg] No, it doesn't start at all when starting the server
[08:13] [alkisg] It may also be hanging, but I've verified that sometimes it doesn't start at all
[08:13] bobby_C (~bobby@85-124-22-227.teleworker.xdsl-line.inode.at) joined #ltsp.
[08:13] [Gadi] gotcha - so an nfs server bug
[08:13] [alkisg] I think so
[08:14] [alkisg] It says that statd is redudant with nfs v4, but I think it's still used for nfs 3. I don't know if it should be starting automatically or not...
[08:14] [alkisg] (according to the upstart job, it should, but sometimes it isn't)
[08:15] [alkisg] Also, nolock would speed things up... how ofter do people need shared locks under /home?
[08:17] [Gadi] wasn't the whole point of nfs_home bec you needed statd that sshfs did not properly provide?
[08:17] [Gadi] or was it some other reason?
[08:17] [alkisg] Locks are provided even without statd
[08:17] [alkisg] They're just not syncronized between clients
[08:17] scottmaccal (~scottmacc@sentry.jayschools.org) left irc: Quit: Ex-Chat
[08:17] [Gadi] ah
[08:17] [alkisg] So e.g. evolution doesn't run with sshfs , but it runs fine with nfs, either with or without statd
[08:18] [alkisg] So I'm worried that other people had this hangs, and didn't even know why they happened...
[08:18] [Gadi] if someone uses fat and thin clients and has nfs mounted homedirs on the app server and the client, would nolock cause breakage?
[08:19] [vmlintu] At least with hardy nolock broke some applications. I just cannot remember what those were..
[08:20] [vmlintu] I haven't tested nfs3 with lucid, so I don't know how it behaves now
[08:20] [alkisg] *If* I understand it correctly, nolock will let the apps work fine, but it's possible that two persons write to the same "locked" file because the locks weren't shared...
[08:20] staffencasa (~staffenca@128-193-152-135.oregonstate.edu) joined #ltsp.
[08:20] [alkisg] I haven't tested nfs before at all
[08:21] [alkisg] ...and it's hard to find information... I don't think many people are using the NFS_HOME lts.conf variable...
[08:21] [vmlintu] I'll be using nfs4+kerberos with fat clients to get better security
[08:22] [alkisg] That's a nice setup... I hope we could automate this
[08:22] [alkisg] vmlintu: it's not possible to specify "nolock" from the server, it has to be specified on the client, right?
[08:23] thunsucker (~Trey@12.94.187.50) joined #ltsp.
[08:23] [thunsucker] Good Morning!
[08:26] [alkisg] Hmmm maybe I'll just patch it in my PPA until we have more info about the problem.
[08:28] [vmlintu] alkisg: I cannot find the old information anymore.. it could also be that I remember it wrong and the problem was something else
[08:28] [vmlintu] I just remember fighting with a lot of mount options earlier
[08:28] [alkisg] I found similar error messages in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/nfs-utils/+bug/540637
[08:29] [alkisg] ...hmmm or we could just provide another lts.conf option, NFS_MOUNT_OPTIONS :P :D
[08:29] [johnny] anybody know anything about a usage timer?
[08:30] [johnny] basically.. i need to remind people after 20 minutes on the terminal that they need to look around to see if somebody else wants to use it
[08:30] [johnny] nothing so bad as logging them off.. just a reminder
[08:31] [alkisg] johnny: just put a script in /etc/xdg/autostart that sleeps for 20 minutes and then calls zenity
[08:31] [johnny] kinda thinking of an applet..
[08:33] [alkisg] You can send bubble notifications (in the up right corner) from a shell script, but if you need an applet, I think there's an alarm applet
[08:33] [johnny] yes.. there's a timer applet that i use when i put food into oven
[08:33] [johnny] i guess i'll have to go look harder then
[08:35] [johnny] seriously.. i can't view uploaded images on ubuntuforum if i don't login... wtf
[08:35] [thunsucker] johnny: what about changing their background to a PLEASE LOG OFF IF NOT IN USE type of image
[08:37] [johnny] because most people use apps in full screen
[08:37] [johnny] me.. i never see my background.. my im client is most likely to be my actual background more than what i actually have set :)
[08:37] [johnny] i use gajim in one window mode..
[08:38] [johnny] that's how i'm in this room right now..
[08:38] [thunsucker] johnny: that makes sense, same here
[08:38] [johnny] via xmpp -> irc transport
[08:38] [thunsucker] johnny: of course when i have ubuntu installed on this laptop i have 8 screens so occasionally i see the background lol
[08:39] [thunsucker] and i'm itching to install lucid on here
[08:39] [johnny] i upgraded to fedora 13 2 weeks ago
[08:39] [thunsucker] cool like it?
[08:39] [johnny] altho i deploy ltsp on ubuntu.. going to upgrade that to lucid as soon as my fellow collective member stops working
[08:40] [johnny] his teaching semester is almost over
[08:40] [johnny] yes.. i'm a big fan of fedora..
[08:40] [johnny] nice to see 3d on open nvidia drivers..

[08:41] [johnny] i'm using it on my 6 year old dell inspiron 8600
[08:41] [thunsucker] johnny: cool maybe i'll give it a shot
[08:41] [johnny] 15.4 inch widescreen..
[08:41] [johnny] it has served me well
[08:42] [johnny] im suprised that there's still not much going on in the light computer area ..
[08:42] [johnny] they are still all about the same weight..
[08:42] [thunsucker] johnny: what email client you use? I hate to admit it but I love the functionality of outlook
[08:42] [johnny] i'm currently using evolution.. but keep flirting with mutt/sup
[08:42] [johnny] if you like outlook.. evo is probably the closest
[08:43] [johnny] and it can also import pst files
[08:43] [johnny] then again.. so can thunderbird
[08:43] [thunsucker] johnny: i hate evolution lol
[08:43] [johnny] if you do it on windows (or at least last time i checked)
[08:43] [thunsucker] i don't mind loosing the email
[08:43] [johnny] that's what i did when i first switched to linux full time
[08:44] [johnny] switched from outlook to thunderbird on windows.. and then copied the directory into my ~ renamed .thunderbird
[08:44] [johnny] and it worked
[08:44] [johnny] i was surpised
[08:44] [thunsucker] johnny: cool
[08:44] [elias_a] sudo iptables -L
[08:44] [elias_a] Oops :)
[08:44] [johnny] we can't showw your chains here..
[08:44] [johnny] sorry
[08:47] [johnny] i really like how evo integrates with the clock applet thing..
[08:47] [johnny] and also how it uses the keyring infrastructure
[08:47] [thunsucker] johnny: you're killing me i want to install lucid very badly lol
[08:47] [johnny] also it saves me from having a separate rss feed reader
[08:47] [johnny] it's ok.. lucid doesn't have the open 3d nvidia drivers
[08:48] [johnny] nor does it have evo 2.30..
[08:48] [johnny] it does have open nvidia drivers in general. just zero 3d support
[08:48] [johnny] the kernel they picked is too old
[08:49] [johnny] /me wonders what alkisg thinks about systemd ..
[08:49] [alkisg] Gadi, I've added an NFS_HOME_OPTIONS lts.conf variable, does it look ok? http://pastebin.com/N8fi9AQ3
[08:49] [alkisg] johnny: never heard about systemd..
[08:50] *** alkisg reads http://www.netsplit.com/2010/04/30/on-systemd/ ...
[08:53] [johnny] http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/systemd.html
[08:53] [johnny] it's so funny to watch thsi argument.. as the gentoo init system is certainly far superior to anything seen on distros up until upstart
[08:54] [johnny] mainstream distros anyways
[08:54] [johnny] lennart might have a point about systemd perhaps becoming better..
[08:54] [johnny] but the gentoo init system (and the new/compatible one openrc) are both dependency based.. and quite speedy (especially openrc)
[08:54] [Gadi] alkisg: looks good to me
[08:55] [johnny] /me pokes Gadi
[08:55] [Gadi] meanwhile, I wonder if we should move away from running pulseaudio in system mode
[08:55] [johnny] Gadi, have you heard anything about controlling client usage.. but not in a hardcore way

[08:55] [Gadi] johnny: how do you mean exactly?
[08:55] [johnny] Gadi, is that possible?
[08:56] [johnny] i mean about pulseaudio in system mode
[08:56] [Gadi] hehe - we are crosstalking
