[05:18] [frederickjh] Hi all! I am looking to up grade my LTSP server that we are using at home. It is a P4 3.2Ghz. Things have slowed down considerable upgrading to ltsp-5 so I am wondering if anyone out there has any advice regarding performance differences between Intel DualCore (multiple cores) and Intel Core 2 Duo (multiple processors).
[05:19] [frederickjh] That is performance on a LTSP system. Or if you have a favorite processor why?
[05:24] [frederickjh] No, takers?

[05:31] [Appiah] I meant, benchmarks on ltsp setups
[05:31] [frederickjh] However, he says the dualcores were new then and he did not have an experience so I was wondering if anyone did have any experience.
[05:32] [Appiah] "This article is out of date. It should be updated to reflect the current state of LTSP"

[09:23] [vagrantc] stgraber: pretty major rewrites?
[09:23] [stgraber] vagrantc: yep
[09:24] [stgraber] vagrantc: I completely forgot to send that to the ML ... the work on that is over for like 5 weeks or so ;)
[09:24] [vagrantc] debian still hasn't frozen yet... but it's "any day now" and major changes are somewhat frowned upon...
[09:24] [stgraber] it really behaves the same way, it should just be a lot easier to work with in the future (especially with Scotty's work on pam/dbus/ssh)
[09:25] [stgraber] yeah, I went without it for 10.04 as it's LTS, I'll have it included in 10.10 though
[09:25] [stgraber] I wanted something we know is stable and well working in 10.04 and keep the new stuff for 10.10
[09:25] [stgraber] what releases of ltsp and ldm are you going to have in the next Debian stable ?
[09:25] [vagrantc] yeah. in general, same for debian...
[09:26] [stgraber] (just wondering if we are in sync there)
[09:26] [vagrantc] stgraber: i'm one version ahead of you in ltsp/ldm
[09:26] [stgraber] ah right, I saw you tagged recently
[09:26] [vagrantc] stgraber: mostly translations and a fairly important bugfix to ltsp-update-sshkeys you should get in your first point release for lucid
[09:26] [stgraber] so you don't have the ltsp-update-sshkeys mess ;)
[09:27] [stgraber] I had to do some pretty ugly workarounds in d-i and the live installer for that thing ;)
[09:27] [vagrantc] while you worked around it in d-i, it might mess things up when they reboot the server too
[09:27] [vagrantc] at least, that was my experience...
[09:27] [stgraber] it shouldn't, I'm basically starting ssh, doing keyscan, killing ssh
[09:27] [stgraber] oh
[09:27] [vagrantc] you make sure it doesn't run on initial boot?
[09:27] [stgraber] so that ifup trigger is breaking things ?
[09:28] [vagrantc] yeah
[09:28] [vagrantc] at least it was for me
[09:28] [stgraber] well, good thing is that we don't use nfs ;)
[09:28] [vagrantc] hah!
[09:28] [stgraber] so it's not broken, it breaks only if they do ltsp-update-image :)
[09:28] [stgraber] but I think I ran ltsp-update-image a few times without major breakage
[09:28] [vagrantc] the likelihood of running ltsp-update-image before sshd starting is small in your scenario then
[09:28] [stgraber] I'll see how it goes on Launchpad and if needed will do some SRUs
[09:29] [stgraber] though most of my users are running with my PPA and so will get .2 whenever it's released
[09:29] [vagrantc] i'd push for fixing it just because it is pretty ugly...
[09:29] [stgraber] (SRUs are not very fun to do, backport in PPA is much simpler ;))
[09:30] [stgraber] yeah, I saw that ltsp-update-sshkeys got reverted to its old way of working but it was already RC or final freeze, so it wasn't likely I could get that in
[09:30] [vagrantc] i know how that goes
[09:32] [vagrantc] stgraber: any new build-deps for your ldm branch?
[09:33] [stgraber] that's a very good question ;) I have basolutely no idea, I don't think so as it's all regular gtk and sbalneav's window manager was probably only xlib or similar.
[09:34] [vagrantc] lot of merge conflicts with ldm-trunk ...
[09:35] [vagrantc] which, i guess is because it just changed the way a lot of things work...
[09:36] [vagrantc] ah, it was branched before 2.1
[09:36] [stgraber] that and the branch is relatively old
[09:36] [stgraber] yeah
[09:36] [stgraber] so there's some merging to do
[09:36] [vagrantc] sounds like there's significant enough changes to call it 2.2.x
[09:36] [stgraber] I don't think the upstream C code changed that much
[09:37] [stgraber] yep, I'd clearly go with 2.2 for that branch as it'll probably be the LDM for LTSP 6 (or whatever we call it at this point, that's the DBUS-aware LTSP)
[09:37] [vagrantc] dbus aware? whoah.
[09:38] [sbalneav] The ssh-lib based pam module sort-of-works, I need to get it to spawn off the ssh now.
