[08:18] [epaphus] hello all. The average bandwith consumption for a thin client is 2000-5000Kbytes/se while surfing the web (without flash).. and having office opened. Right?
[08:19] scottmaccal (~scottmacc@sentry.jayschools.org) joined #ltsp.
[08:19] [epaphus] so If my server has 1 gigabit network card and 1gigabit/sec is 128Megabytes /sec then it is safe to assume that 1 card could handle about 20 users
[08:19] [epaphus] right?
[08:21] [alkisg] epaphus: I don't think we have a measure for the average bandwidth consumption, but yeah, a gigabit network for 20 "office" users should suffice fine
[08:22] [alkisg] (except for impress slides transitions)
[08:22] [epaphus] what are impress slides transition?
[08:22] [epaphus] the X session is encrypted right?
[08:24] [alkisg] I mean the presentations created with openoffice impress (powerpoint)
[08:25] [alkisg] If they have transition effects, they're too slow in ltsp
[08:25] [epaphus] ahh got it
[08:25] [epaphus] well youtube runs perfectly fine
[08:25] [alkisg] The X session is encrypted unless you use LDM_DIRECTX=True
[08:25] [epaphus] in fact i cant even notice iam using a thin client :P

[08:26] [epaphus] iam going to be using an i7 cpu
[08:26] [epaphus] :P
[08:26] [alkisg] (or even 5 of them :))
[08:27] [sbalneav] epaphus: It really depends. Once you receive the web page, and are "reading" it, you're not using up any badwidth at all.
[08:27] [epaphus] Also.. is there any advantage of not using deskptop backgrounds in ltsp ?
[08:27] [sbalneav] I currently have one sever with 40 terminals hanging off of it, and they work fine.
[08:28] [sbalneav] epaphus: Other than using less ram on the thin clients, not much.
[08:28] [epaphus] great.
[08:28] [epaphus] this is sooo awesome.
[08:29] [epaphus] One more question. Can ltsp handle softphones now a days? (twinkle, ekiga) .. any advantage of running as a local app?
[08:29] [sbalneav] That's how I'd run a softphone.
[08:29] [sbalneav] many people have deployed skype solutions using localapps.
[08:30] [epaphus] ok cool.
[08:31] [epaphus] Is setting a localapp easy stuff? Is it true that if I set firefox as a localapp iam not necessarly running java/ flash as a local app also?
[08:33] [sbalneav] If you set up firefox as a local app, you'll have to set up flash, java, etc as local apps as well.
[08:33] [sbalneav] Local apps are fairly easy to set up, but there are some gotchas

[09:02] The_Code (~jweber@opensuse/member/japa83) joined #ltsp.
[09:02] [sbalneav] that would mean that the browser would be running on the server, but it would have to know that one of the elements on the web page was running on the client.
[09:05] *** alkisg has managed to communicate with the ltsp clients using reverse bash => python connections, and is now looking at python asyncore... if anyone has any thoughts/python networking experience, I'd be glad to hear it
[09:07] [sbalneav] What is it you're communicating?
[09:08] [alkisg] I'm trying to implement something like italc, but more advanced
[09:08] [sbalneav] AFAIK, "Twisted" is the "premier" python network framework.
[09:08] [alkisg] So the server would keep active control connections to all clients (as root) and all connected users (through the ssh channel)
[09:08] [sbalneav] alkisg: this for that other project you pointed me at?
[09:08] [alkisg] Yes
[09:09] [sbalneav] I did some fiddling around with it... remind me where the source is again?
[09:09] [highvoltage] hi sbalneav and alkisg
[09:09] [alkisg] http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~sch-devs/sch-scripts/trunk/
[09:09] [highvoltage] for some reason it feels like months since I spoke to you
[09:09] [alkisg] hi highvoltage
[09:09] [sbalneav] It's been about 4 weeks or so since I looked at iy.
[09:09] [sbalneav] hey highvoltage
[09:09] [highvoltage] how are things?
[09:09] [alkisg] We've finished the thin/fat installation "automation" and now we're looking to embed classroom management tasks
[09:10] [sbalneav] highvoltage: very busy at work. :( Year end at gov't agencies is always hellish.
[09:10] [highvoltage] what is classroom management tasks?
[09:10] [alkisg] So that the teacher is able to send commands to either the TCs (e.g. poweroff) or the client sessions (e.g. open that URL on firefox)
[09:10] [highvoltage] oh cool
[09:10] [alkisg] Any daemons on the clients won't do, as TCs are unsafe by default
[09:11] [alkisg] (so ssh etc aren't any good)
[09:11] [alkisg] So I'm looking at reverse connections, where the TCs connect to the server... that should be a little safer
[09:12] [alkisg] bash exec 3<>/dev/tcp/server/port is fine for that - it only needs 3 MB on the client, and has no dependencies at all
[09:12] [alkisg] But on the server a python module would be needed...
[09:21] jhutchins (~jonathan@64-151-37-66.dyn.everestkc.net) joined #ltsp.
[09:31] mikkel (~mikkel@84-238-113-66.u.parknet.dk) joined #ltsp.
[09:31] Nick change: leio_ -> leio
[09:38] [alkisg] So I'm thinking to create a python server that would accept connections from TCs and users, and create sockets for those connections in /var/run/ltsp-control/<host>-<user>-<ip>.socket. Then a teacher can connect to that socket either with an app (sch-scripts) or with just bash <> socket, and execute commands on the TCs/student sessions. And maybe I'll put some group-based permission on those sockets...
[09:38] [alkisg] That way to see which TCs/clients are connected to the ltsp server, a simple ls /var/run/ltsp-control would suffice...
