[00:40] [alkisg] I'm looking to override the upstart tools (start, stop, etc) so that e.g. acpid isn't started if it's installed by ltsp-build-client. I proposed dpkg-divert initctl, but stgraber didn't think it was a good idea as it might be copied in the initrd, and proposed overriding them with shell functions instead. Unfortunately that also doesn't work, as e.g. acpid.postinst doesn't inherit those functions.
[00:40] [alkisg] So, I'm thinking of creating a special directory, putting face start/stop etc scripts there, and prepending $PATH with it. Any thoughts?
[00:40] [alkisg] (I.e. I want to do that in 000-daemon-handling)
[00:41] [alkisg] *fake

[00:54] [stgraber] alkisg: you can try: export -f function-name
[00:54] *** alkisg tries...
[00:55] [stgraber] alkisg: but I'm assuming they'll start a sub-shell and so won't inherit the custom function
[00:55] [stgraber] anyway, it's almost 3am here, going for some sleep ;)
[00:55] [alkisg] Good night
[00:55] [alkisg] (I thought you were already asleep, that's why I didn't ask you in #edubuntu :))
[00:58] [alkisg] Nope, it doesn't work, I'll test to see if the PATH approach works...
[01:15] [alkisg] Hmmm I wonder if apt hooks exist, so that the path is automatically changed whenever apt is called inside the chroot
[01:27] [alkisg] Those seem interesting... "Pre-Invoke, Post-Invoke: This is a list of shell commands to run before/after invoking dpkg(1). Like options this must be specified in list notation. The commands are invoked in order using /bin/sh, should any fail APT will abort."

[09:17] [sbalneav] You mean like compiz?
[09:18] [Damianos] Actually not compiz but metacity in Gnome
[09:18] [Damianos] I don't have a gfx card capable of running compiz but metacity gives me some basic effects and runs really well on the server
[09:18] [sbalneav] Well, I'm running metacity now, and I've got 185+ terminals at work that run metacity
[09:19] [sbalneav] They run a full gnome desktop
[09:19] [Damianos] I didn't start having freezeups until I also added Avant Window Manager
[09:19] [johnny] i wonder if google really will switch youtube to html5.. it seems feasible..
[09:19] [johnny] more feasible than before anyways..
[09:19] [sbalneav] Morning johnny
[09:20] [johnny] sbalneav, seems that epiphany will have hte ability to play vids on youtube with html5 using gstreamer
[09:20] [johnny] even without google doing anything about it
[09:20] [Damianos] oops, I meant Avant Window Navigator
[09:21] [johnny] sbalneav, mornin :)
[09:21] [Damianos] Hi Johnny
[09:23] [sbalneav] I'd love to switch to epiphany.
[09:23] [sbalneav] Everybody wants lockdown features for Firefox, but firefox doesn't talk gconf at all :(

[09:27] [sbalneav] alkisg: Well, that's a possibility
[09:28] [sbalneav] Probably easier is for me to write a sabayon source that understands firefox's 'lock_pref(".....")' for a user.js file.
[09:28] [johnny] sbalneav, wasn't there some specific support in sabayon for firefox?
[09:28] [sbalneav] Bookmarks
[09:28] [johnny] seemed kinda limited
[09:29] [johnny] ah.. just bookmarks..
[09:29] [sbalneav] but it's badly broken
[09:29] [sbalneav] it's still assuming the old bookmarks.html file
[09:29] [sbalneav] and of course firefox has moved on to the sqlite format.
[09:29] [sbalneav] I'll have to tackle firefox at some point... sigh.
[09:29] [johnny] so.. why not switch to epiphany?
[09:30] [sbalneav] Actually, the firefox lockdown should be part of Pessulus
[09:30] [johnny] seems to be getting better.. they even had a hackfest for it and webkitgkt
[09:30] [sbalneav] well, *I* wouldn't mind it, personally.
[09:30] [sbalneav] but firefox is the 900 pound gorilla sitting in the room, we need to deal with it :)
[09:31] [johnny] perhaps the problem should be solved @ firefox..
[09:31] [johnny] i wonder what peeeps are doing with firefox and AD
[09:31] [johnny] give you a good idea how people are tryin to lock it down

[09:33] [alkisg] Firefox does have support for mandatory settings. It's just a matter of where it reads them from (e.g. /etc/* or gconf or some sabayon per-group directory)...
[09:34] [sbalneav] alkisg: The "big problem" is that sabayon handles things by putting conf files in your home dir
[09:34] [sbalneav] .gconf.xml.mandatory, .defaults, etc.
[09:34] [sbalneav] problem is, for FIREFOX, this is a problem...
[09:34] [alkisg] OK, I bet firefox could be patched to read the locked down settings from there...
[09:34] [sbalneav] since firefox doesn't HAVE a "standard" config dir
[09:35] [alkisg] Yeah that's really annoying :(
[09:35] [sbalneav] it has .mozilla/firefox/completelyrandomstringthatchangesusertouser
[09:35] [johnny] sbalneav, you can force that tho
[09:35] [johnny] by editing the profile.ini
[09:35] [sbalneav] ....ORLY?
[09:35] *** sbalneav perks up ears
[09:35] [sbalneav] do tell!
[09:35] [sbalneav] I'd LOVE to know
[09:35] [alkisg] johnny: it's not really a good solution, as a user might NEED multiple profiles
[09:35] [johnny] just syain that if you change Profile1 directory, i'll use it
[09:36] [sbalneav] ah, ok.
[09:36] [johnny] sure.. but you could just change to to say dir=Default
[09:36] [johnny] err dir=default
[09:36] [johnny] under [Profile1]
[09:36] [alkisg] sbalneav: does sabayon apply mandatory settings?
[09:36] [alkisg] s
[09:36] [sbalneav] alkisg: yessir
[09:36] [alkisg] Where does it put those settings?
[09:37] [sbalneav] in the user's .gconf.xml.mandatory directory.
[09:37] [alkisg] How much "mandatory" is it, if it's in the user's home directory?
[09:37] [johnny] sbalneav, i wish distros would agree to a common way to handle attribute based access controls and group settings directory :(
[09:37] [sbalneav] alkisg: Well, they get re-written every time you log in
[09:37] [johnny] sabayon wouldn't have to do so much then :(
[09:37] [sbalneav] amen
[09:38] [alkisg] sbalneav: so if I wanted to enforce a proxy, I couldn't really do it with sabayon, as the user could just delete those settings...
[09:38] [alkisg] I mean, they're not really mandatory, they're just "defaults", right?
[09:38] [sbalneav] they'd have to 1) delete the settings manually with rm -rf .gconf.xml.mandatory
[09:39] [johnny] how come those can't be ready from /etc/gconf ?
[09:39] [sbalneav] 2) restart their gconf, which would hose their gnome
[09:39] [johnny] read*
[09:39] [johnny] of course.. alot of this is going to stop mattering when gsettings is more popularized.. + dconf..
[09:39] [sbalneav] 3) they'd log out, log back in, and sabayon-apply would re-create .gconf.xml.mandatory
[09:40] [sbalneav] alkisg: keep in mind, if you really want, you can still gconftool-r --mandatory --source=/etc/gconf....
[09:40] [sbalneav] gconftool-2
[09:40] [sbalneav] even
[09:40] [sbalneav] alkisg: AND
[09:41] [sbalneav] once I get PolicyKit blah blah blah support
[09:41] [johnny] too bad gconf can't be run at the system level.. with config stuff from /etc/gconf.. then the user couldn't do nothin
[09:41] [alkisg] johnny: it can't? why not?
[09:41] [sbalneav] the bit that writes the files in .gconf.xml.* can write the files chown root.
[09:41] [alkisg] That's where I was "going" to...
[09:41] [johnny] cuz it's a session level process?
[09:42] [johnny] gconff was never meant to be what we really want it to be :(
[09:42] [johnny] we were still learning back then :)
[09:42] [alkisg] gconf says that "I read the default settings, override them with user settings, and then override them with mandatory settigns"
[09:42] [johnny] alkisg, pay attention to gSettings, and dconf
[09:42] [alkisg] It does support multiple and stacking sources
[09:42] [alkisg] That thing isn't new to gsettings
[09:43] [sbalneav] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aZFetrUEo0
[09:43] [alkisg] It should be simple (I don't think it is) to set a different order at the sysadmin's request
[09:43] [sbalneav] yikes
[09:43] [johnny] alkisg, that's what i'm talkin about..
[09:43] [johnny] make sure to try to get input for dconf and gsettings now..
[09:43] [johnny] especially dconf
[09:43] [johnny] since it won't appear til after this gnome release by default
[09:43] [alkisg] It's not the backend's problem, though. It's the front-end that has the problem
[09:43] [johnny] now is the time to make sure
[09:43] [alkisg] gconf already supports stacking settings
[09:43] [johnny] it's partly the backends problem..
[09:44] [johnny] gconf is complicated in the way it works
[09:44] [johnny] in the wrong way..
[09:44] [alkisg] sbalneav: hahaha wow :)
[09:44] [alkisg] Unbelievable!
[09:45] [sbalneav] I like how the moment the train goes by, shoop, out comes the stalls, people walking down the streets, etc.
[09:46] [johnny] i see that all the time when i'm walkin down the street :)
